To address the growing environmental concerns associated with conventional plastic packaging derived from petroleum and contribute to a more sustainable future, our goal is to revolutionize the packaging industry through the development of a novel 100% naturally biodegradable transparent film using bacterial cellulose (BC).
BactOPack has successfully developed novel BC films through simple physical and chemical modifications. The technology has been granted with U.S. Patent in 2024. The properties of these modified films, including morphology, water/oil/antibacterial barrier, mechanical/thermal stability, were thoroughly investigated to create an eco-alternative for packaging industry. Our transparent BC films enable customers to visually inspect the packaged food, ensuring product quality and reducing the need for additional packaging materials. The BC film effectively preserves food by minimizing exposure to air. Furthermore, BC offers a significant advantage in terms of its biodegradability. Unlike PLA and other bio-based products, BC films can naturally degrade within five months in soil, aligning with the natural decomposition rate of organic matter. This not only reduce plastic waste but also mitigates the risk of microplastic pollution. By achieving our project objectives, we aim to contribute to a circular economy, reduce plastic waste, and protect ecosystems from the harmful effects of single-use plastic packaging.
